Obituary

Martha Caroline Zollmann Kellogg was born April 17, 1923 in Sachsenflur, Baden, Germany to Karl and
Elizabeth Barbara Waldmann Zollmann. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith on April 29, 1923. At the age of eighteen months she immigrated with her parents from post-WWI Germany to the United States where they were sponsored by Martin and Maggie Kistner from Stuttgart, Kansas. Their sponsors helped Karl find work and helped the family get settled. The family joined Emmanuel Lutheran Church where Martha would be a lifelong member. In 1929 the family moved to a farm of their own just in time for the depression/dust bowl.

Martha attended school in Stuttgart through the eighth grade. Since it was too far to make the trip from the farm to Stuttgart each day Martha stayed with the Kistners in Stuttgart during the school week where she helped with chores. One chore was tending to cattle as they moved along the road and edges of wheat fields in search of food which was scarce during the dry and dirty '30s.

After graduating from the eighth grade she stayed at home for a couple of years working on the farm and working for others in the community to earn money to attend high school. A listing of her jobs and employers shows that she sometimes made $.50/day. She graduated from Phillipsburg High School in three years while rooming for two years in Phillipsburg  and working at the Duckwall store. She recalled that one of her high school classes was self-taught after her teacher was drafted into the armed forces during WWII.

Following graduation from high school Martha worked for the Superintendent of Schools and helped her parents on the farm during the summer months. In 1945 she took a bus trip to Wisconsin to visit a friend which was a new experience. On the way back home the bus broke down so she spent the evening sitting on the steps of the Post Office visiting with a young soldier who was returning home from the war. Exactly one year later she married that soldier boy, Rex Kellogg, on August 4, 1946. They were married for 67 years until Rex passed away in July, 2013.

Martha spent most of her working years at the Phillips County Courthouse. After working for the Superintendent of Schools where she was sometimes called into duty as a substitute teacher she made the decision that she definitely did not want to become a school teacher. After some years as a stay at home wife and mother she returned to work at the Courthouse as the secretary for the Probate Judge (now District Magistrate Judge). When the judge became ill local attorneys encouraged her to serve as the Judge Pro Tem and at election time they encouraged her to run for the office. She was elected handily and was re-elected for multiple terms until her retirement in 1994. She cared about the community and had a helping attitude so she was a positive influence on many. She was still respectfully addressed as "Judge" well after her retirement. A former juvenile case told her son that if it wasn't for Judge Kellogg he would have probably ended up in prison instead of having a family and a successful career.

Martha was a devoted mother who encouraged her children to pursue their interests and dreams. She served as a Sunday School teacher, Bible school teacher, school room mother, Blue Bird leader, and Cub  Scout leader. She especially enjoyed being a 4-H leader and was a community leader for many years for the City Slickers 4-H Club. She always encouraged her 4-H members to "Make the Best Better" and her       members earned many awards at the county, state, and national level.

She was active in various community groups and was always ready to help. After her retirement she and Rex served in numerous volunteer positions in the church and community including at the Senior Center and Food Bank. She put other people first and never wanted to trouble anyone to make herself more comfortable.

Martha loved to sing, could pick out an alto harmony to almost any song, and sang for years in the church choir. She liked to keep busy and always had a project at hand. On any road trip she always brought along a project to work on. She made numerous quilts and afghans for her children and grandchildren, crocheted dozens of pot holders, and embroidered multiple sets of towels and pillowcases.

Martha passed into her heavenly home on July 14, 2021. She is survived by her brother Carl John (Delores) Zollman of Phillipsburg; her children Karolyn Kellogg of Hutchinson, Kenneth (Sharon) Kellogg of Andover, Robert (Mary) Kellogg of Valley Center; seven grandchildren; and Thirteen greatgrandchildren. Waiting to greet her in heaven were her husband Rex, her parents Karl and Barbara Zollmann, and parents-in-law Ray and Bessie Kellogg who all preceded her in death.

Martha's caring attitude and warm smile will be greatly missed by family and friends.
