Longtime resident of Downs, Kansas, Mary A. Grauer Mullen Pottberg passed away on Monday, September 19, 2011 at Prairie Haven Care Home in Kensington, Kansas at the age of 88.
Mary was born January 22, 1923 in Marysville, Kansas, the daughter of John and Bertha (Hohn) Grauer, ninth of twelve children. She attended Marysville schools, graduating from Marysville High School with the class of 1941.
On June 4, 1942 Mary was united in marriage to Gilbert Francis "Moon" Mullen in St. Gregory's Catholic Church, Marysville, Kansas. They lived in the Marysville area until May 1964. They then moved their family to Downs, Kansas where they owned and operated Moon's Texaco, for which she managed the bookkeeping. She also worked as a cook at Merle's Cafe and later at the Senior Center. She was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
On December 27, 1986, Mary married Kenneth John Pottberg in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Downs, Kansas. She lived south of Downs until November of 2008 when she moved to the Kirwin area.
Survivors include 2 sons: Steve Mullen & his wife Sheryl and Kirby Mullen & his wife Peggy, all of Kirwin; 1 daughter Susan and her husband Dwight Wood of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; 1 son-in-law, Doug Driggs and his wife Leanna of Phillipsburg, 10 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter; 16 nieces and nephews; and many step children, grandchildren and great great grandchildren through her marriage with Kenneth.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilbert, in 1982 and husband, Kenneth, in 2009; youngest daughter, Ellen Driggs on September 27, 2005; six brothers; three sisters; one sister and one brother at birth; 5 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thurs., Sept. 22, at 10:00 a.m. in the SS Philip & James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg, with Father Benjamin Saw officiating. A graveside service and burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Cawker City Cemetery, Cawker City, KS.
Visitation will be Wed. from noon – 9:00 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg. A Rosary Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wed. evening at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. afterward.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Prairie Haven Nursing Home, American Diabetes Assoc., or the Alzheimer's Assoc.
