Maxine Frances Walker, daughter of Orville Andrew Smalberger & Opal Althea (Sweet) Smalberger, was born June 26, 1930 on a farm in Decatur County, Kansas. She passed away at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, Kansas on June 11, 2018 at the age of 87.
Maxine attended country schools in Marion, Nebraska and Sherman Center, Kansas during grade school and then graduated from Decatur Community High School in Oberlin, Kansas in 1949.
On June 14, 1953 she was united in marriage to Verle Lee Walker at the Presbyterian Church in Oberlin. This union was blessed with two daughters, Lesle and Jean.
Verle and Maxine were fortunate to have almost 42 years together before his death on April 4, 1995.
Maxine worked for ten years as secretary at the Decatur Community High School and two years at the Oberlin Grade School. She was also the secretary of the Decatur County Business Service for four years.
Maxine enjoyed spending time with her family and cherished the special times with her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
In addition to her husband, Verle, she was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Lesle Diane Walker on July 27, 2002; and her sister, Roberta Barnett.
Survivors include her daughter, Jean Stapel & husband, David, of Phillipsburg, KS and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 16, at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Chris Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 14, from noon – 9 p.m. and again Friday, June 15, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
