Mildred Christine Marple, daughter of Forest Verner and Ollie (McQueen) King, was born July 31, 1911 in Greenwood Township near Kirwin, Kansas and passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, Kansas at the age of 101.
Mildred attended Kirwin schools, graduating with the class of 1930.
On June 1, 1930, she was united in marriage to John Wesley Marple. John's 8-year-old son, Donald, made his home with them. The couple was blessed with three more children: Shirley, Gary and Rachel.
Mildred was a devoted housewife and mother who enjoyed being involved in her children's school activities. She served on the school board, helped with various community and church activities, and also worked at the Kirwin Lumber Yard for a number of years.
In 1984 Mildred moved to Phillipsburg, Kansas, making her home in the Westview Apartments for 26 years. She shared her passion for needlework, especially quilting, with neighbors & friends who joined her in this pastime. Many people in the community knew Mildred only as the "quilting lady", and records show that this special group of ladies completed 755 quilts during their years of sewing together.
Mildred was a member of the Phillipsburg United Methodist Church and a 75-year member of the Order of Eastern Star.
In April, 2010, health issues forced Mildred to move to the Phillips County Retirement Center where she resided until the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; stepson, Donald; daughter, Shirley Allen; a sister, Leona McConnell; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Survivors include her son, Gary & wife, Marcia, of Forest, VA; her daughter, Rachel Ellis of Phillipsburg, KS; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dixie Young, of Lancaster, NY.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Gary Davison officiating. Burial will follow in the Kirwin Cemetery, Kirwin, KS.
Visitation will be Tues. from 5 – 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Phillips County Retirement Center or the Westview Senior Club.
