Oren M. Christy, 91, was born on September 21, 1925 on the farm near Agra, Kansas to Charles & Nora (Farley) Christy. He died Thursday, June 29, 2017 at the Phillips County Retirement Center, Phillipsburg, KS.
He attended the rural Liberty School and then graduated from Agra High School in 1943. He was inducted into the Army on April 10, 1945, serving during World War II, and was honorably discharged on November 18, 1946.
After his military service, Oren returned home and took over the family farm. On August 5, 1951, he married Velda N. Johnson in Kensington, Kansas. Their home was blessed with three children: Debra, Steve & Patrice.
Oren spent his life doing what he loved - farming and raising cattle. He also loved sports, playing football in high school and baseball for many years. He enjoyed watching and following all sports, from high school to professional teams.
He was actively involved in church and community activities throughout his life. He was baptized in the Agra Christian Church and later became a member of the Phillipsburg United Methodist Church. He was a member & past Commander of the American Legion and also a member of the Lions Club. Oren served on the ASCS Board as well as the Farmers Home Administration.
For many years, Oren and Velda enjoyed square dancing. They were blessed to have shared over 65 years of marriage together.
Oren was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Fern Schenible and Leora Fouts; his daughter, Patrice (Christy) Rhodes; son-in-law, H. J. (Hank) Rhodes III; and a granddaughter, Christy Rhodes.
He is survived by his wife, Velda of the home; his children, Debra Stohs & husband, Dave of Bremen, KS and Steve Christy & wife, Deb of Norton, KS; 5 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 2 step great-grandchildren; and 2 step great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 3, at 2:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Lew Van Der Wege officiating. Burial will follow in the Agra Cemetery, Agra, KS, with military honors by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard.
Mr. Christy will lie in-state on Saturday, July 1, from 5 – 9 p.m. and again Sunday, July 2, from noon – 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Agra City Lake or the Phillipsburg United Methodist Church.
