She attended the one-room Cora School located near the farm where she grew up with her brother, Gene, which her family still owns to this day. Later the family moved into Smith Center where Peggy finished her primary education. She graduated from Smith County High School with the class of 1963, having earned the honor of Salutatorian.

Later that year, on July 14, 1963, she was united in marriage to LaVon Cole in the Congregational Church in Smith Center, Kansas.

She loved her Lord, Jesus Christ and was actively involved in the life of the Presbyterian Church in Phillipsburg where she served as a ruling Elder. She also served on many church committees and led the church youth group for many years. Her faith and discipleship was an important influence on her grandchildren and their friends.
