Obituary

Phillip Raymond Altman, age 85, Logan, KS passed away at Hays Medical on May 29, 2025.

Phillip was born June 3, 1939, in Norton, KS to Raymond and Geneva Altman of Almena, KS. After graduating from high school in Almena, Phillip attended Fort Hays State on a football scholarship and played baseball for the Hays Larks. While in college, Phillip married Roselyn Dome of Hays, KS on August 20, 1960. Phillip graduated in 1961 with a BS in Math followed by a Master's Degree in Math. He began his teaching career at St. Joseph's Military Academy in Hays. Phillip taught there for three years before moving to Bazine, KS for another three years. While in Bazine, Phillip completed his Master's Degree in Counseling and began a teaching career at Logan High School where he taught math, physics, and psychology and served as a guidance counselor.  After retiring from teaching in 1999, he was married to Saundra Mongeau (1999-2022). He faithfully attended the Logan Catholic Church. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Phillip also had a passion for farming. He raised a variety of farm animals including cattle, hogs, sheep, goats, and horses. He loved his garden raising a variety of vegetables each year. He was also a very successful dowser.

Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Roselyn (May 20, 1994) his sons Mark (Jan. 22, 2021) and John (June 25, 2011), and his brothers Merle, Kenneth, and Ledean. Phillip is survived by his son Stephen, daughter-in-law Mary, grandson Connor (Olathe, KS)  and granddaughter Emily Williamson (St. Louis, MO); daughter Carolyn and daughter-in-law Faith Bridges (Lawrence, KS), brother Dan Altman (Eudora, KS); grandchildren Emily Fatali (Mykel) (Salt Lake City, UT), Mary Sarmento Leite (Rodrigo) (Overland Park, KS), Avery Altman (Scottsdale, AZ), Marcus Altman (Mission, KS), Makenzie (Altman) Henman (Isaac) (Ellis, KS), and Macee Altman (Hays, KS), and great-grandchildren Rosalie Sarmento Leite, and Jaxon, Remi, and Raylan Henman.

A celebration of life service will be held at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (203 Main Street) in Logan, KS, on June 14 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family has asked that you perform an act of kindness, donate to your favorite charity, or bake something sweet and share it with the people you love in Phil's name.
