Kirwin resident, Queenie Evalena Pickel-Leydig, died Friday, March 25, 2016 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 93.

She was born in Logan County, Colorado the daughter of Albert C. & Pearl Mae (Hatfield) Iman.

On May 11, 1943 she was married to Carlos Albert Pickel. To this union their daughter, Cleora was born. Queenie worked as a seamstress and cleaned houses for many of her neighbors in the Holdrege, NE area. Carlos preceded her in death on May 7, 1965.

Queenie then met a married William Norman Leydig on November 24, 1969 in Holdrege, Nebraska. The lived in Omaha for seven years and then moved back to Glade, where they owned and operated the Glade Greenhouse and Flea Market. In 1999 they sold the greenhouse and moved into Kirwin. Norman then passed away on October 24, 2006.

Queenie loved to garden, grow flowers, especially iris. She enjoyed going to auctions, sitting on the front row and collecting teapots. She was an excellent quilt maker; making them by hand. It was said that she made 100 crocheted afghans, giving most away to family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers, I.J., Milo & Archie; husbands, Carlos Albert Pickel and William Norman Leydig; and an infant son.

Survivors include a daughter, Cleora McPhillamy & husband, Bruce of Kirwin, KS; 6 grandchildren, Christy, Shawn, Angel, Bill, Bambi & Philip; 25 great grandchildren; 28 great great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews; and a host of friends.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2016 in the Marvin Cemetery, Glade, with Pastor Deb Harvey officiating.

Mrs. Leydig will lie in state from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.
