Obituary

Robert Valentine Becker, age 86, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, October 25, at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina Kansas.  Robert Becker was a man of God, Strength of Character and Integrity.

Bob was born on November 14, 1935 on a family farm outside of Logan, Kansas, to Rhodney and Lucille (Jaenicke) Becker. Robert attended school in Logan and graduated from Logan High School in the class of 1954.

On September 6, 1958, Robert married Mary (Lynch) Becker in Logan, Kansas. Robert and Mary had three children: Gary, born in Stuttgart, Germany while Robert was stationed overseas, and Laquita, and Rebecca both born in Kansas. Robert and Mary celebrated 50 years of marriage together until Mary passed away on November 19, 2018.

Following high school Robert "Bob" worked for the Hansen Company and farmed his own property until in 1958 when he received a US draft letter that stated "Your friends and neighbors volunteered you to go into the US Army."  After he completed Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training, Bob and Mary were stationed in Crailsheim, Germany with the United States Army.

Robert Becker served in the US Army in Germany just after World War II with the 4 th Armor Division as front-line Tanker Combatant.  His mission was 24 hours per day 365 days per year protecting West Germany and the world on the East-West Wall against a potential Soviet Union invasion during the "Cold War".   After two years of service with the US Army, he achieved the rank of Specialist, received an honorable discharge, and returned to the United States where he served an additional two years in the United States Army Reserves.

After moving back to Logan, Kansas from Germany, he initially worked for the CO-OP Gas Station Company pumping gas and at the same time farmed his own property.   In 1966 while working on his farm, he started his business named "Becker Terracing" which became one of the most successful road and infrastructure companies in Northern Kansas.

Bob had the skills to fix nearly anything mechanical and spent his life doing what he loved: moving dirt, farming, taking care of his cattle, operating heavy equipment, restoring antique tractors, and welding in all sorts of projects.

Bob was involved in many different organizations such as the American Legion, Logan Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, and the KLICA.

Due to an illness in 2020, he wasn't able to remain on the family farm and run his business.  So, he moved to Minneapolis Kansas where he was primarily cared for by his daughter Rebecca and her husband Scott and spent weeks at a time in Hays with his daughter Laquita.  Laquita always found time to take Bob back to his home in Logan to oversee his farm and business even if it was just for the weekend.

Robert enjoyed joking with all the Dialysis Nurses that helped him throughout his visits to the Salina and Hays Dialysis Centers and he even considered them to be part of his family.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his parents Rhodney and Lucille, and his brothers, Jerome, Paul, Ronald, and Cliff Becker.

He is survived by his son Gary Becker and Gary's wife Sandy of Logan, daughters Laquita Becker of Hays, and his daughter Rebecca and husband Scott of Minneapolis.  He was also survived by his grandchildren Shaun and Tiffany Becker, Garrett and Kari Becker, Chad Becker, Austin and Bridgette Becker, Randal and Haley Torres, Nicholas and Melissa Torres, Briana Torres, 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, October 29, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. in the St. John Catholic Church, Logan, with Father John Schmeidler and Father Daryl Olmstead officiating.  The services will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel FaceBook page.  Following the service, Robert will be laid to rest in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan, with military honors.
