Roy Orlin Bretton, son of Mavor & Ethel (Smith) Bretton, was born January 25, 1942 in Kirwin, Kansas and passed away July 27, 2013 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, Kansas at the age of 71.
He grew up on the family farm with his brothers, Ralph and Rex, and sisters, Lila and Luella. Roy attended elementary school and later left school to help his parents on the farm.
He then went to work at a service station junking cars but was injured and had to look for other types of employment. This was when he began over-the-road truck driving. Roy also worked at the Norton and Plainville sale barns, but eventually went back to driving a truck. In his later years Roy stopped driving and went back to farming and raising horses.
One of the greatest joys of his life was his three children: Kerri Ann, Mindi Sue and Tracy Orlin. During his years on the road they always looked forward to seeing Dad 'cause he usually stopped at McDonald's or Long John Silver's on the way! After his children were grown, he was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren to love and spoil.
Roy was preceded in death by his father; his sister, Lila; grandson, Taylor Hohlstein and granddaughter, Shelby Jarvis.
Survivors include his mother, Ethel Bretton of Phillipsburg; daughters, Kerri Bouchard & husband, John, and Mindi Crain, all of Phillipsburg; son, Tracy & wife, Michelle, of Plainville, KS; two brothers, Ralph Bretton of McCook, NE and Rex Bretton of Phillipsburg; one sister, Luella Snyder of Ness City, KS; 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 2, 2013 in the Olliff-Boeve Memrial Chapel, Phillipsburg. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Roy will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday with the family receiving friends Thursday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for visitation.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Roy O. Bretton Memorial Fund.
