Shirley Marie (Horn) Smith, daughter of Myron Charles & Mercedes Casadena (Cary) Horn, was born May 22, 1940 in a farmhouse south of Logan, Kansas, and passed away June 15, 2014 at the Logan Manor Nursing Home in Logan, KS at the age of 74.
She attended country school north of Logan until second grade and then transferred to school in Speed, KS where she graduated from 8th grade. Being the 3rd of eleven children in the family, it wasn't surprising that money was "tight", so she wasn't able to finish high school at that time.
On November 23, 1957, Shirley married her sweetheart, Carl Eugene Smith, in Smith Center, Kansas. The couple lived in rural Phillips County for several years before moving into Logan in 1977. Their family was blessed with five children: Carla, Deborah, Lorri, Brenda and Steven. Carl & Shirley later adopted grandson, Randon Smith, and raised him as one of their own children.
In 1974 Shirley began her nursing career, working as a nurse's assistant (CNA) and Medication Aide at Logan Manor. In 1980 she earned her high school GED and took classes from Colby Community College to obtain her LPN degree. After working at Logan Manor as an LPN for nine years, Shirley went back to school and in May, 1990, earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Barton County Community College. In addition to her twelve years as an RN at Logan Manor, she also served as the Director of Nursing, taught CNA and Med Aide classes, and provided services to the City of Logan as Health Officer. She was honored with a Lifetime Nursing Achievement Award for her 39 years of dedicated caregiving. Shirley retired from her nursing career at Logan Manor in 2002 due to health reasons.
In addition to raising her family, furthering her career, and helping with community activities, Shirley always made time for her faith. She was a devoted and active member of the First Christian Church in Logan, having served as Secretary of the Board and also as a member of the Christian Church Willing Workers.
Her hobbies included crocheting, cross stitching, painting, ceramics, and gardening. She also enjoyed singing and spending "quiet time" reading her Bible. However, her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the most cherished treasures of her life. Her presence will be greatly missed by all those whose lives and hearts she touched.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clayton, Frank, and Roger Horn; one grandson, Jeff Chestnut; and one great-grandson, Levonte Reed.
Survivors include her husband, Carl, of Logan; her children: Carla Griffin & husband, Flint, of Norton, KS; Deborah Smith of Kingman, KS; Lorri Burns & husband, Blake, of Kensington, KS; Brenda Chestnut & husband, Dennis, of Speed, KS; and Steven & wife, Susan, of Ellis, KS; five brothers: Jim Horn of Salina, KS; Chuck Horn of McPherson, KS; Ed Horn of Hoyt, KS; Danny Horn of Great Bend, KS; and Nick Horn of Hays, KS; three sisters: Veda Brasted of Logan, KS, Peggy Campbell of Phillipsburg, KS, and Idona Duncan of Stockton, KS; along with 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Christian Church, Logan, with Pastor Troy Buss and Glen Graham officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan.
Mrs. Smith will lie in-state Tuesday from noon – 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the Logan Funeral Home in Logan.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Logan First Christian Church or Logan Manor.
