Obituary

Steven Lee VanDerVeen  passed away January 2, 2023 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg due to complications of a long illness at the age of 53.  He was born July 16, 1969 at the Norton County Hospital to Kenneth and Judy (Delimont) Minshall.

Steve's mom Judy married Jay VanDerVeen on October 12, 1974 and in December of 1974, Jay adopted Steve & his sister Kenberlea.

Steve was baptized at the Luctor Christian Reformed Church.  He attended school in Logan where he participated in football, basketball, track & in the summers, baseball.  He earned many medals in sports.  Track was a highlight as he participated in the Kansas State track & field as a pole-vaulter & in running events.  He graduated from Logan High School with the Class of 1989.  He then attended Goodland Vo-Tech where he received a degree in tele communications.

At a young age, Steve discovered his love for motorcycles.  He enjoyed many hours on his Harley & was a member of the Free Tomorrow motorcycle club.  Motorcycles were a lifelong enjoyment.  He also enjoyed athletic sports, water sports & hunting.

In 2001, Steve was in a serious accident that left his ankles paralyzed. Even with his disability he could win a 5K race in his wheelchair.  Steve's healing progressed to only needing a cane to walk.  One great thrill was being able to start a motorcycle again.

Steve never ceased having stories to tell about something he had seen while driving a semi down the highway.  He will always be remembered for the pranks he loved pulling on his friends.

He was preceded in death by his nephew, Chaston VanDerVeen.

Survivors include his parents, Jay & Judy of Prairie View; 2 sisters, Kenberlea Cashiola & husband Philip of Carrollton, TX & Stacie DeBoer  & husband Shane of Prairie View; his brother, Cory & wife Kristi of Prairie View; 2 nieces, Alyssa DeBoer of Kearney, NE & Kinley VanDerVeen of Prairie View; 3 nephews, Gage DeBoer of Prairie View, Jorryn Atkinson of McKinney, TX & Connor VanDerVeen of Prairie View as well as many aunts, uncles & cousins.
