Theron Norwood Van Allen (better known as Bud or T.N.) departed his earthly life on May 6, 2016, at the age of 94 years. Bud was born on April 23, 1922, on the family farm on Bow Creek, rural Phillips County. He was the third son of Edwin Voyle Van Allen and Fannie Fern (Wisehart) Van Allen. He recalls walking 1½ miles to school (uphill both ways) packing a cold lunch. One time he forgot his report card and had to return home. His two big brothers went on without him. When his dad saw his sad face, he said, "I'll give you a ride." Bud remembered grinning and waving at his brothers as they drove past them.
Bud and his brothers raised turkeys to afford a high school education as they stayed in town with the Boeve family during the school week. Bud was active in athletics and was named the first Phillipsburg High School Homecoming King in 1939. Bud graduated with the class of 1940 and then worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in South Dakota to take out trees and build dams. He earned $25/month plus room and board.
Bud served in the Army Air Corps from 1942–1943. Following service, he helped the war effort by working at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita earning 95 cents/hour. His first car was a 1938 blue Chevy Coupe. Bud married Maxine Lindahl on February 28, 1944, and they lived in Wichita until the war was over, returning to Phillips County to farm. Bud and Maxine raised their family and were active in the children's school, 4-H, church and community activities. He also drove a school bus for many years. Bud was a faithful fan of K-State football. He was baptized and joined the United Methodist Church on June 17, 1990.
He reluctantly left the farm in 2006 due to health reasons but made multiple trips every day to check on the farm. He enjoyed playing cards, going to auctions, and coffee time at the Gretna elevator and the Branding Iron. Family trips were always an adventure (many miles, meals eaten along the highways and even sleeping in the car). After the family was grown, he traveled to Washington, D.C., New York, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Branson and a Caribbean cruise.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Maxine in 1993, brother Eldon and wife Nadine, and sister Joy Wade and husband Lewis. He is survived by his five children: Sherry (Don) Calhoon, Mick (Pat) Van Allen, Sue Kipp, Connie (Louis) Zillinger, and Doug (Darcie) Van Allen, all of Phillipsburg; 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Darrel and wife Arlene, Clearwater, KS; many nieces and nephews.
