Vada Marie Erickson was born on January 21, 1932 in Prairie View, Kansas. She was the only child of Leonard and May Ross Erickson. She attended school at Prairie View, graduating with the class of 1950. She attended one year at Brown Mackie Business School in Salina, Kansas.
Vada and Robert Gene McDonald were married October 1951 at the Prairie View Reformed Church. The couple moved to Logan, Kansas where Bob was employed by Cities Service Oil Company. Bob left Logan for the Army November 1952. He was stationed at Camp Polk, Louisiana and Vada joined him January 1953. Their first daughter Carol Jean was born there in 1954. That fall the family returned to Logan to Bob's job at Cities Service. Mary Mabel, Robert Linn, and James LeRoy were born during this time.
Vada was a member of the Logan Christian Church and participated in all church activities. She was the Activity Director at Logan Manor from 1971 to 1984 and after that she was a volunteer. Vada and Bob received the Volunteer Award of the Year from the Leaning Age Organization in Wichita for nursing homes for their 50 years of volunteering at the Logan Manor. Their family was there along with many from the Logan Manor and other friends.
After Bob and Vada retired, they enjoyed bus trips, going to auctions, following their grandchildren to sporting and school events, and spending time camping with the whole family.
Survivors include daughters Carol and husband Doug Haberman of Hays and Mary and husband Ron Dole of Hill City; sons Linn and wife Pam, and Jim of Logan; seven grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren.
Vada was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two infant grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 23, 2017 in the Logan Christian Church with Pastor Troy Buss officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan.
Visitation will be Saturday & Sunday, Oct. 21 & 22 from noon until 9 p.m. at the Logan Funeral Home, Logan, with the family greeting friends Sunday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Memorial Contributions may be given to Hospice Services, Logan Manor or the Cookson Hills Children Home.
