Verla Marie (Kincaid) McDermed was born October 30, 1924 to Paul Henry and Shella Claire (Farley) Kincaid on a farm southwest of Kirwin, KS in Phillips County. She was one of 8 children who became known as the "V-8's" because of their names: Vernon, Velmer, Victor, Virgil, Viola, Veda, Verla & Vivian. She passed away on June 22, 2017 at the Holiday Resort in Salina, KS at the age of 92.
Verla attended the rural Saylor School District #16 in Phillips County, graduating from 8th grade. She spent a year in Tangier, OK, where her parents lived while her father worked as a custodian at the local school. She was baptized on November 29, 1944 at the Christian Church in Woodward, OK.
Verla returned to Kansas in 1944, about the same time her future husband, John McDermed was discharged from the military service. John & Verla were married on April 17, 1945 at the Christian Church Parsonage in Phillipsburg, KS. Verla attended the Methodist Church near her home until she could no longer climb the church stairs.
The couple started their married life on a farm north of Gretna, KS where they lived for 3 years before making their permanent home in Glade, KS. They loved being outside, working in their yard and raising a big garden, sharing produce with family and friends. John & Verla celebrated 52 years of marriage together before John's passing on October 9, 1997.
John & Verla were blessed with a daughter, Vonda Kay, who was the light of their life. Later they were also blessed with 3 granddaughters, Sharon Quested, Sherry Geisler and Sheila Seiler, who brought much joy to their lives as well.
Verla was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, 4 brothers & 3 sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Vonda K. Karr & husband Jim of Culver, KS; 3 granddaughters: Sharon, Sherry & Sheila; great grandchildren: Gerad, Brandon, John, Andrea & Chishum Quested, Dominick Eilrich, Krenda, Kylynn & Joseph Seiler & Alexis Geisler & 1 great great grandson, Zechariah.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 29, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Lew Van Der Wege officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Mrs. McDermed will lie in-state on Tuesday, June 27, from 5 - 9 p.m. and again Wednesday, June 28, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to Phillips County Home Health, Abilene Christian Church, or the Glade United Methodist Church.
