Obituary

Verlyn Harley Thalheim, son of Clarence and Nan (Gilchrist) Thalheim, was born December 20, 1919 in Long Island, Kansas, and passed away August 9, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska at the age of 90.

Verlyn spent his entire lifetime in the Long Island area, attending the Long Island Schools and graduating with the class of 1938.

On June 12, 1940, he was united in marriage to Loraine Van Kooten at her parent's home in Long Island, Kansas. The couple was blessed with three children: Patricia, Verlaine, and Kent.

Verlyn had two passions in life…his family and the family farm. He was involved in his children's school and sports activities, as well as in those of his community. In later years, he continued to be an avid sports fan, following the sporting events of his grandchildren and along with Loraine, they were named the 2001 Northern Valley Sports Fans of the Year. He was a lifelong member of the Luctor Christian Reformed Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Loraine; his parents; one brother, Lloyd Thalheim; and one sister, Florence Richards.

Survivors include daughters, Patricia Hammond & husband Gary of Long Island, and Verlaine Schooler & husband Melvin of Logan, KS; son Kent & wife Belinda of Long Island; grandchildren Trevor Hammond & wife Shanna of Long Island; Brandon Hammond & wife Amy of Kearney, NE; Rebekah Mussman & husband Paul of Minden, NE; Rachel Martin & husband Trevor of Marcus, Iowa; Austin Thalheim & wife Angela of Hays, KS; and Avery Thalheim of Long Island; great-grandchildren Makenna, Aidan, and Owen Hammond ; Benjamin Hammond; Colin Mussman; Kenton, Gavin, and Taiton Thalheim; sister-in-laws Geraldine Van Kooten of Hays, KS and Donna Fae Van Kooten of Long Island; one brother-in-law Allen Van Kooten of Concordia, KS; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the Luctor Christian Reformed Church, Phillips County, with Rev. Jeff VanDerWeele officiating. Burial followed in the Long Island Cemetery, Long Island.
