Vernon Dale Soodsma passed away August 26, 2022 at the St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, KS at the age of 85.
Vernon was born July 4, 1937 in Phillips County, KS, the son of John William and Gertrude Johanna (Hogan) Soodsma. He was raised on the family farm near Prairie View and continued the tradition of the family farm until moving to Scott City. He attended a one room school in rural Phillips County and graduated from Prairie View High School in 1955. He was a member of the Army National Guard. On October 8, 1965 he was united in marriage to Gladys Jane Kats at the Luctor Christian Reformed Church where he was a lifelong member. He served as the woodworking project leader for the Lone Prairie 4-H Club in Prairie View, KS for many years.
Vernon continued the agricultural life when he moved to Scott City, KS and worked at Royal Beef Feedyard. He was an avid woodworker, well known for his wood refinishing.
Survivors include his wife Gladys of Scott City, KS; three sons Kevin and wife Amy of Grand Rapids, MI, Scott and wife Melissa of Healy, KS; and Terry of Buffalo, NY; two daughters Denise Van Soelen of Denver, CO and Tonya Koehn and husband Burke of Scott City, KS; a sister Leota Ehm of Indianapolis, IN; and six grandchildren; Brittney VanSoelen, Patrick VanSoelen, Blake Koehn, Tayler Koehn, Brice Koehn, John Soodsma; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2022 in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church in Phillips County, KS with Pastor Shawn Richardson officiating. The services will be streamed live on the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page . Burial will follow in the Luctor Cemetery.
Mr. Soodsma will lie in state from noon until 9 p.m. Monday with the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2 nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS 67661.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Luctor Christian Reformed Church Memorial Fund.
