Obituary

Viola Marcella Sandstrom, daughter of William & Alvena Marie (Folkerts) Ernsting, was born April 15, 1920 on a farm in Rush County, Kansas and passed away December 2, 2016 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, Kansas at the age of 96.

On September 9, 1945 she was united in marriage to Joe F. Sandstrom in Albert, Kansas. This union was blessed with one daughter, Joyce Elaine.

The family made their home on Joe's parents' family farm for 62 years. They moved into Phillipsburg in 2007 to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law.

Viola was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed being a homemaker. From as early as her high school days, she was well-known for her baking and cooking skills. Everyone looked forward to the desserts she provided for school, community and church functions. She also loved sewing, doing hand work & quilting, and spent much of her time reading the Bible until failing eyesight made it difficult for her to see.

Church and family were the focal points of Viola's life. She was very involved in church activities and was always willing to provide food or lend a helping hand. Viola was a kind, caring woman whose character was based on honesty and integrity. She was a loving grandmother and great-grandmother who treasured the time spent with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe; and her sister & brother-in-law, Velda and Robert Dryden.

Survivors include her daughter, Joyce White and husband, John, of Stuttgart, KS; two grandchildren – Verlyn White & wife, Emily, of Creston, NE and Darla Abbott & husband, Kenton, of Great Bend, KS; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2016 in the First Assembly of God Church in Phillipsburg, KS, with Pastor Dave Pugh officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Mrs. Sandstrom will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday & Thursday in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS 67661.
