Virginia Lee Underwood, daughter if Homer and Jewell Rice, was born on July 18, 1937, in Chetopa, Kansas, and passed away on January 30, 2026, at the Logan Manor, in Logan, Kansas, at the age of 88.

Virginia grew up in Chetopa and a few other places before landing in Norton, where her mother was admitted to the sanitarium as a Tuberculosis patient.

She married Robert Underwood on June 14, 1969, and together they were blessed with 3 children, which came Deanna, James (Jim), and Dan Underwood.

She was a member of the Norton Christian Church, and a very active member of the American Legion Auxillary. Together, Robert and Virginia were big SPPA members. She would say Robert did way too much for the tractor shows!

Virginia worked for SRS as a Long-Term Care worker and Jill’s Helping Hands. She was an avid reader. She loved her westerns and her word finds.

Virginia is preceded in death by her husband Robert, parents Homer and Jewell, son Jim Underwood, brother Jerry Rice, sister Harriet Shroeder, paternal parents James and Jacquline, sister-in-law Gloria Jones, brother-in-law Patrick Underwood, and grandson Brandon Sumner.

Survivors include daughters Deanna Sumner and husband Todd of Norcatur, Kansas, Denise Roberson of Colby, Kansas, son Dan Underwood and wife Russchelle of Joes, Colorado, brother-in-law Bill Underwood of Norton, Kansas, and a few nieces and nephews. She was Granny to 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., at the Norton Cemetery, in Norton, Kansas, with Pastor Nate Hagen officiating.
