Obituary

Walter A. Brouhard passed away March 25, 2011 at the age of 92 at the Phillips Co. Hospital. Walter was born December 29,1918 in Cheyenne, WY, the son of Elwin J. Brouhard and Effie Louise (Batchelor) Brouhard. He had two brothers, Frank and Edwin and two sisters, Della Sparks and Grace Waldon.

After Walter was born his family moved to a farmstead near Lyle, KS. where Walter and his siblings grew up. Walter went to the rural school until he completed his eight grade year, then he worked on the family farm. When the Depression hit, he went to Salmon, Id. to work for the U.S. Dept. Of Agriculture Grazing Service. He was in charge of the caterpillar & Bulldozer crews. After his time was up there he joined the Navy on January 1,1942. He served on the USS Stack and the USS Idaho. On October 7, 1945 he was honorably discharged from the Navy.

After his military service he moved to Cincinnati, OH to be near his sister Della and family. He lived and worked in this area for the next ten years or so, where he met Mona Wells. They were united in marriage on July 23, 1956 in Phoenix, AZ. where they made their home for the next 42 years. Walter worked for Caterpiller as a big equipment operator in the Caterpiller proving grounds near phoenix. Walter and Mona were very active members of The General Baptist Church in Glendale, AZ.

After his wife's death in the fall of 1997 Walter moved back to Smith Center, KS to be near his brother Frank who had also lost his wife. They enjoyed two great years together before Frank passed away. After Frank's passing Walter moved to Phillipsburg to be near his niece, Connie Stapel and family. He was active at the Senior Center and delivered meals for several years. Walter was also very active in the Wesleyan church in Phillipsburg. He lived in his home in Phillipsburg until his failing health made it necessary to move to the Phillips Co. Retirement Center for the last three years where he enjoyed making his daily phone calls to family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mona Wells Brouhard, his parents, his brother Frank and infant brother, Edwin, his sisters Grace & Della.

Left to mourn him are his step-daughter Marie Stewart and husband Larry of Burlington, KY. and seven step-grand children and many step-great grand children and many many nieces and nephews.

Walter was a great step-father, step-grandfather, & step-great grandfather and Uncle as well as a friend to all. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 28, at 10:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Rick Calvert officiating. Burial will follow in the Lynden Cemetery in Hendley, NE.

Mr. Brouhard will lie in-state Sunday from noon – 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
