Warren L. Stevens, son of Elbert & Etta E. (McDermed) Stevens was born July 26, 1925 in rural Phillips County, near Gretna and passed away, April 20, 2016 at the age of 90.
His early years were spent on the farm going to country school, then to Kirwin his freshman year. He then transferred to Agra where he graduated in 1942 at the age of 16. He worked in farming for 2 years before entering the Army Air Corp (Air Force) in Sept. 1944, where he spent most of his time stationed in Brisbane, Australia, also traveling through several South Pacific islands. After the war was over, he volunteered 6 months in Japan, being honorably discharged as a corporal in April 1946 to come home.
He was united in marriage to Joy Williams of Nebraska in Sept. 1946. One daughter, Phyllis Diane was born. They moved to Hutchinson where Warren attended college and worked for a lumber company. Then back to Phillipsburg where he worked for Western Auto Store before moving to Kansas City, where he worked for Westinghouse Electric.
He then married Carol Fishbaugh in 1952. They had two daughters Debra Le & Shirley Louise. Then on October 17, 1964 he was united in marriage to Leila Jean Wells at the Central United Methodist Church in Kansas City, KS, where the family attended regularly. This became a blended family of 5 girls with Jeans three daughters, Brenda, Bonnie & Kristine. Warren worked for the Western Auto and the Klughart Machinery. They had 2 children Vanessa Kay & Jerry Warren, both born in Kansas City. The family moved to Albuquerque, N.M. in 1972 where Warren worked for Duke City Lumber Company as a carpenter and maintenance man until he retired in Sept. 1987. Warren & Jean moved to Glade in 1988 to be near his mother and other relatives where he did odd jobs for neighbors & friends.
Warren was an excellent carpenter and remodeled every house he lived in until ill health struck him in 2013. He was a member of the Glade United Methodist Church where he attended regularly. He was also a member of the Agra American Legion & life member of the North American Fishing & Hunting Clubs. Warren enjoyed going to Washington DC on the Honor Flight Trip.
His hobbies were collecting foreign coins, old stamps & making small wooden items, shelves, etc.
He was preceded in death by his parents; baby sister, Frances; brother, Dean; daughters, Phyllis Stevens, & Debra Brown; & wives, Jay & Carol; and niece, Kathy. He was then followed in death by son-in-law, Donald Lumpkin on April 21, 2016.
Survivors include his wife Jean; daughters, Shirley McNew of Gladstone, MO & Vanessa Montoya of Albuquerque, NM; son, Jerry & wife, Terri of Amarillo, TX; step-daughters, Brenda Lumpkin of Phillipsburg, Bonnie Wells & David Gonzales of Glade, KS & Kris Kersh of Denver, CO; 23 grandchildren; numerous Great & Great Great Grandchildren; & many other relatives & friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 25, 2016 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Lew Vanderwege officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Mr. Stevens will lie in state from Noon until 9 P.M. Saturday and Sunday with the family receiving friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.
