Obituary

William H. Stowell, son of Samuel O. & Fern L. (Marvin) Stowell, was born August 26, 1919 in Oberlin, Kansas, and passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012 at the Prairie Haven Nursing Home in Kensington, Kansas at the age of 92.

He attended schools in Oberlin, often with his Mother teaching him, and graduated from Oberlin High School.

During his teen years his family operated a Grade A dairy near Oberlin which kept him busy with chores and milking in the mornings and evenings.

After graduation William attended college at Fort Hays State University for two years and then transferred to Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas. He entered law school at Lawrence until he was drafted into military service. He spent 3 ½ years overseas in the Army during World War II.

After his honorable discharge from the Army, William resumed his education at KU Law School. It was here that he met his future wife, Doris Dixon, who was also a law student. The couple was married on May 25, 1946 in the Danforth Chapel on the KU campus in Lawrence, Kansas.

After finishing their education and passing the bar exam, William & Doris moved to Phillipsburg, Kansas where they made their home and opened their private law practice. The couple was blessed with the birth of two daughters, Susan Jean and Sarah Ann, to complete their family.

On May 25, 2011 William & Doris celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Theirs was a union built on sharing and working together in all aspects of day-to-day living, demonstrating the importance of love and commitment in building a strong family. In later years they also enjoyed the special times spent with their four grandchildren: Laurel, Jay, Morgan & Zachary.

William was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel & Fern, and sisters, Merriam and Millie Esther.

He is survived by his wife, Doris, of the home in Phillipsburg; daughters, Susan Bittner of Long Beach, CA and Sarah Ruhlen of Phoenix, AZ; and their grandchildren: Laurel Ruhlen and Jay, Morgan & Zachary Bittner.

Cremation was planned. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the United Presbyterian Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Chris Davis officiating.

Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. Friday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.
