Obituary

Phillips County resident, Wyatt A. Winchell, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 91.

He was born May 20, 1919 on the family farm northwest of Long Island, KS, the son of Wyatt & Rose (Behringer) Winchell. He attended country school and graduated from the Long Island High School. He then joined the United States Army Air Corp on March 16, 1942. He was stationed in Panama where he worked as an aircraft mechanic during World War II. Following his honorable discharge on Nov. 8, 1945 he returned home to farm with his father. During this time he also helped construct the Almena Elevator, maintained roads in Dayton Township and did custom baling in the area.

On October 31, 1946 he was united in marriage to Marie Rodenbaugh in Norton and they had 47 years together. They lived on the home place north of Long Island from 1949-1968, then moved to Almena until 1993 when they moved to Phillipsburg. Wyatt cared for Marie lovingly as she dealt with Alzheimer's. Four children blessed this union: Sal, Jim, Kay & Rex.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Marie on November 16, 1996; sister, Mildred Ensminger; a step great grandson, Levi Bowers; a great grandson, Tyson Kinderknecht; and a great granddaughter, Olivia Marie McClelland.

Survivors include 2 sons, Jim Winchell & wife Sandi of Almena and Rex Winchell & wife Donna of Agra; 2 daughters, Sal McClelland of Almena and Kay Lofquist & husband Don of Elwood, NE; 7 grandchildren; 8 step grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 12 step great grandchildren; 1 step great great grandson; and many nieces, nephews & cousins.

Wyatt will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Don Covington officiating. Burial followed in the Long Island Cemetery, Long Island, KS with military honors by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard.
