Our beginnings

Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel began serving Phillips County and surrounding areas in 1946 when the Simmons-Olliff Funeral Home of Smith Center and Kensington, previously known as Simmons-Rice, purchased the William Scholz Mortuary in Phillipsburg. Arel and Minnie Olliff, with Lebanon, KS roots, moved from the Kensington funeral home, to manage the business now known as Simmons-Olliff.

Darel joins the family business

In 1955, Darel Olliff, Arel & Minnie’s son, returned from his service in the Army, having obtained his mortuary science degree from Wayne State University in Michigan, and later a bachelors degree from Fort Hays State University. He joined his father and that year the name was changed to Olliff Memorial Chapel.

Olliff-Boeve Begins

In 1957, Ron Boeve, Sr. returned from his service in the Air Force and he and Darel purchased Mr. Simmons’ interest in 1960 and changed the name to Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel. In 1966, Darel and Ron purchased and closed out the Miles Funeral Home of Phillipsburg.
Arel and Minnie, Darel and Shirley Olliff, and Ron and Eunice Boeve operated the funeral home for many years as the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel. Arel passed away in 1972 and Minnie in 1984.

The Tradition continues

Kenton Olliff, who grew up in the funeral home, joined his father and uncle in 1985. Ron Boeve, Jr. joined the firm in 1990. The two sons purchased the business from their fathers on January 1, 1997. In 1998, Kenton left the family business to pursue other interests, and in 1999, Chris Hugunin, a Phillipsburg native, joined the firm, purchasing interest in 2002. In December 2021 Conlee Hugunin, Chris' son, joined the business full time. In May 2025 Dayton Hugunin, Chris' youngest son, joined the business.
